It’s 3 months since Manchester digital agency Project Octo established a new footing in Australia, founding a new office in Melbourne.
Director Ketan Mistry has been noticing some significant differences between the two digital scenes, which may be of interest those in Britain’s vibrant digital scene – and vice versa.
In December director Ketan Mistry took his wife and young child to the other side of the world to relocate, and establish a new base for the business. It was a brave decision, and one which very few digital agencies from the UK have taken up to now. He has been noting some of the differences between the two distinct digital scenes in the UK and Australia, and finding them to be significantly different.
Australia’s Growing Digital Scene
“In the UK, the digital scene has matured more. We have a long developed and established industry, whereas in Australia, it’s still very much in a growth stage.“There are businesses that taken a churn and burn approach, and others that haven’t delivered on their promises, and so I think think there’s a gap in this market for greater quality.
“UK agencies like INK and Digital Next have come over here, and taken that opportunity. I think, given the location right near Singapore and other big businesses in the Asia-Pacific region, that there’s so much here that’s possible”.
Free Ecommerce Software Gets Traction
Meanwhile, Mistry’s market leading ecommerce software, Shopit, which comes in two flavours, saw one version released free to developers, educators and businesses worldwide in January. It has been a huge success.
Given that his UK retail clients have already been using it for several years, amassing millions of pounds in turnover and for him, he was confident that the software would work. But he had no idea of the market would embrace it. The good news is that enthusiastic coders, freelancers and businesses have been taking on the benefits of this innovative piece of software. Mistry is proud of seeing his ideas being embraced.
“We didn’t know what to expect when we made Shopit 3 available. Our clients loved it and found it straightforward and versatile. But the developer community, and end users had no way of knowing that. Thankfully, it’s now been downloaded many times, and it looks like it’s getting traction”.
